Imperfect Sustainability

Every few weeks, I sit down with my agenda and curate blog topics I want to cover throughout the month. I have a short list of topics already written out but when I looked at them this morning, I didn’t want to write about any of them. Scrolling through my Instagram feed, I noticed the word “imperfect” popping up several times and felt like that perfectly described my mindset today - imperfection.

I am by no means an expert on sustainability. I didn’t go to school for it. My current career isn’t focused on it. Would I like to be? Absolutely. That was exactly why I started this blog. I wanted to educate both myself and others around me about how important it is to clean up our planet and to provide a sustainable world for our current and future generations.

I think it’s important to recognize that being imperfectly sustainable, imperfectly low waste and imperfectly zero waste is 100% okay. I feel guilty all of the time buying items that come in plastic, using items that have a good eco swap but you can’t afford them at that time but you shouldn’t. I follow a ton of sustainability and zero waste groups on Facebook and every time I see people comment on some of those posts, I see their judgement, I see them questioning why someone just can’t simply make the switch. Not every is fortunate enough to.

So what’s the point of this post? I feel guilty every time I used something not sustainable or not zero waste BUT I shouldn’t. It’s okay to not be 100% sustainable. It’s more important to conscious of your choices, to try your best to make the changes but if you can’t, don’t beat yourself up. It’s better to be imperfectly sustainable, imperfectly low/zero waste than nothing at all.
